Discover the Open Mall Praça Pitiguari, one of the largest projects Urbem has had the pleasure of participating in. Using over 1,300 m³ of engineered wood, it stands out not only for its size but also for its absorption of 900 tons of carbon from the atmosphere, thanks to the use of engineered wood, or mass timber, as it is known internationally. The project’s sustainability is further validated by the traceability of the wood used, which comes from controlled pine forests.
The Open Mall’s structure was designed by the office Todescan & Siciliano and reflects a harmony between architecture and nature, creating a unique space for visitors. In addition to being efficient and sustainable, engineered wood allows for faster, cleaner construction with a distinctive design.
The Praça Pitiguari is located next to the Itapetinga State Park, in the city of Atibaia, in the interior of São Paulo. It was designed to integrate its 7,000 m2 built area with nature. Featuring nearly 700 m³ of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) and over 600 m³ of GLULAM (Glue Laminated Timber), this project was completed in 7 months and is set to open in 2025, offering a new approach to gastronomy, shopping, leisure, and entertainment with sustainability as its main pillar.
ENGINEERED WOOD IN THE BRAZILIAN MARKET
Four years ago, engineered wood was still a little-known technology in Brazil. At that time, projects were planned for concrete and adapted to wood as needed by the client. Today, we see engineered wood being used in large residential and commercial projects from the start of their design, showing the market’s evolution.
In 2024, Urbem’s production reached around 4,000 cubic meters, a 50% increase from the previous year. In 2025, the forecast is to double this number, following the growing demand for more sustainable solutions in construction.
EFFICIENT LOGISTICS AND EXPORTS
The logistics of engineered wood are a major advantage, as our material can weigh up to 1/5 of the weight of concrete, allowing us to optimize transportation, reduce costs, and increase efficiency. The proximity of Urbem’s factory in Almirante Tamandaré to the pine forests in Paraná also facilitates the process, enabling quicker and more sustainable loading.
A significant benefit is also that we are serving various projects in different regions of Brazil, such as São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and Bahia. Additionally, we already have projects in Paraguay and are focusing on expanding into the international market.
SUSTAINABILITY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
At Urbem, we believe that economic growth and sustainability go hand in hand. Our commitment to sustainability and environmental efficiency drives us, and we will continue to invest in solutions that contribute to a greener future and more responsible construction.
With Urbem, sustainability goes beyond a concept—it is the foundation for the cities of the future.
